CUENCA, AMIDST FOUR RIVERS
The main treasure to be found in town is its colonial architecture. Cobblestone streets, old adobe houses with heavy wood-carved doors that guard fountains and court yards, colonial churches
and colorful plazas, were all built with an Indian soul under Spanish vigilance. Many Museums preserve treasures of colonial art. UNESCO declared Cuenca a cultural heritage site. The artisanship of its people working with ceramics, wrought iron, gold and silver —creating precious jewels, the famous hand-weaved straw hats, traditional cuisine, are just some of the reasons Cuenca can highlight your trip to Ecuador.
Surrounding villages Gualaceo, Chordeleg, San Joaquin among others are home to Indigenous markets, “Ikat” and basket weavings and handmade jewelry. Nearby is the colorful scenery of the lakes in “Cajas National Park”.
The place where Cañari priests adored the moon and where the Incas later adored the sun. The Ingapirca complex is part of Ecuador's pre- Hispanic legacy, so far the most important archaeological site in Ecuador.
